Even when the ignition is turned off, electronic motorbike accessories such as ECUs, clocks, and key sensors drain a modest current. It’s also known as parasitic draw. This can and will deplete your battery’s voltage in a matter of days. Motorcycle battery maintenance method, disconnect the battery to prevent these draws from killing it. Batteries self-discharge even when there is no load on them. When batteries are kept discharged for an extended period of time, they get sulfated and may lose their capacity to be charged permanently. Charging and storing

Regular and trickle chargers are fine for recharging exhausted batteries and putting them back into use, but they lack the circuitry required to keep a battery’s charge in good condition while storage. When trickle chargers are kept on for an extended amount of time, the batteries are overcharged and damaged.

Lithium Technology vs. Lead Acid Technology

It’s a lead acid battery in most cases if you’re still using the same OEM battery from when you bought the bike. The traditional wet cell, despite being a relatively outdated technology, nonetheless has a number of advantages:


• Replacement costs are low.

• Robustness can be resurrected from near-zero voltage

• Doesn’t necessitate the use of any special charging units


• Because of the wet cells, it’s bulky and there’s not a lot of room to change the proportions for unique designs.

• It can be a lot of weight up high on the motorcycle’s chassis, depending on where your battery tray is positioned.

• If you’re looking for a replacement battery or just want to lose some weight, lithium can be a good option.


• Lightweight; no other way is as cost-effective as shedding up to 40-65 percent of the original battery’s static weight.

• When compared to other batteries, it maintains its charge. Over the course of a year, lithium alternatives lose only around 1% of their overall Voltage.

• If separated from the bike, it is not necessary to charge it; simply store it in a dry spot.

• There is no liquid, thus there will be no spilling.


• Requires a specialist LiFePo4 charger; standard battery chargers can overcharge your lithium battery and irreversibly harm it.

• Expensive

• In harsh temperatures, it may be necessary to use numerous cranks from the starter to “wake up” the battery.

Safety and Maintenance

Because batteries contain sulfuric acid, always heed the warnings. When you working near them, always wear eye protection, rubber gloves, and old clothing, and have baking soda and water on available to neutralize any spilled acid. If nearby sparks or smoking occur, batteries release hydrogen and oxygen, which can explode. Motorcycle battery maintenance, before removing battery terminals, turn off the ignition switch and disconnect the ground side first, so tools don’t spark if they come into contact with metal. To avoid sparks near the battery, always connect the negative jumper cable for the dead battery last, attaching it to a clean metal section of the frame rather than the negative battery terminal. Clean and examine terminals on a regular basis. Non-maintenance-free batteries’ electrolyte levels should be checked at least once a month, especially in hot weather or when they are used regularly. The battery may be damaged if the electrolyte level falls below the top of the internal plates. Only refill with distilled water to avoid mineral accumulation and for good battery maintenance.
